The Ocotillo Lodge
The Ocotillo Lodge was built in 1957, and is a shining example of the desert’s Midcentury Modern architectural vernacular. Conceived by architects William Krisel and Dan Palmer, the property originally functioned as a luxury hotel, hosting well-known personalities such as Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones and the Los Angeles Lakers. The buildings feature clean lines, light-filled interiors, indoor-outdoor spaces and cleverly-appointed solutions for small space living. In 1963, the property was purchased by Gene Autry from its original owners, then Jerry Buss in 1968. Today the units are individually owned, and available to rent.
The lodge was named after the Ocotillo plant which can be found throughout the property. The stunning panoramic view of the San Jacinto mountains, landscape and iconic key-hole shaped swimming pool are still focal points of this historic property. Much of the original design and intent of the property is still intact but the interior of the portico, lobby and clubhouse have been altered over the years. Restoration plans are now underway to return these areas back to their original glory.
